Happy Friday! Lately, K-pop Demon Hunters has been trending all over social media. Everyone seems to love it, and the movie's soundtrack is basically on repeat everywhere. My best friend tried to convince me to watch it, but honestly, I wasn't sure at first. I'm not a big K-pop fan, and it's not usually the kind of movie I go for. But I got curious and I wondered why so many people are obsessed with it. So, I finally sat down to watch K-pop Demon Hunters - and here's what I thought:
Spoiler warning! Before we get started, just a quick heads-up: this post contains a few small spoilers (nothing major - no big twists or surprises), so if you haven't seen the movie yet and want to go in completely blind, you might want to bookmark this and come back later.
What's behind the hype?:
K-pop Demon Hunters has quickly become the most-watched Netflix movie of all time, and its soundtrack is skyrocketing on Spotify and the global charts. With numbers like that, it must be amazing... right? In this post, I'll share my honest thoughts on whether the movie really lives up to the hype - or not.
About the movie:
K-pop Demon Hunters is an animated movie that follows three K-pop idols: Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. But they're more than just pop stars. By day, they perform on stage, and by night, they continue a tradition that's over 100 years old - fighting demons and sending them back to the underworld to protect humanity.
My expectation before watching it:
To be honest, my expectations weren't very high. When I saw the trailer, I wasn't really convinced - it just didn't seem like my cup of tea. To me, it looked like a slightly odd movie about three girls trying to save the world. I couldn't really understand the massive hype around it, and I honestly didn't know what everyone thought was so amazing. Still, I decided to give it a try. Maybe, I thought, I'd end up being pleasantly surprised. So, did the movie change my mind? Let's dive in.
What I didn't like:
First, I have some criticism of the movie - there were a few things I wish had been a little better.
The plot felt rushed. It seemed like there were parts that could've been explored more deeply instead of just jumping from one event to the next. As a result, the story felt both packed and somehow incomplete.
The "cringe" moments. For me, some of the scenes were a bit too silly, and instead of being funny, they gave me secondhand embarrassment. (Probably just not my sense of humor.)
The song "Soda Pop". This might just be my personal taste, but I honestly didn't like it at all. I also couldn't really understand why it was so popular within the movie's story.
The Saja Boys' sudden fame. How did they become more popular than HUNTR/X after just one song? That felt unrealistic to me. Even though they later had "Your Idol", it was still very new.
The clichés. The classic good vs. evil setup, the "we have to save the world" trope, and of course, the slight romance between Rumi and Jinu. Don't get me wrong - I would've liked them together! But it still felt like a pretty predictable storyline.
What I did like:
But it definitely wasn't all bad - there were also things I really enjoyed:
The song "Golden". Arguably the most popular track from the movie, and for good reason. Even though I'm not usually a K-pop fan, I actually liked this one.
Fun fact: HUNTR/X is currently ranked #37 worldwide on Spotify!
The main character, Rumi. In my opinion, she was the most authentic and interesting of the group. With her strong personality, impressive vocals, and clear character development, she felt real - she had both strengths and weaknesses. Plus, her long purple braid made her stand out as the perfect lead character (and fan favorite).
The emotional ending. Even though it felt a bit rushed, I really enjoyed the final scene. The live performance of "Golden" was where the movie finally clicked for me - it was thrilling and emotional at the same time.
The trio's friendship. Rumi, Mira, and Zoey had such a believable and heartfelt bond. They went through ups and downs, and despite being so different, they always came back together in the end.
The performance outfits. The styling for their shows was seriously iconic. I especially loved the outfits they wore during the "Golden" performance - they really added to the whole vibe.
My conclusion:
Overall, I think the movie had some really cool moments, and there were definitely scenes and songs I enjoyed. But there were also parts I didn't like as much - things I wish had been done differently. K-pop Demon Hunters isn't the kind of movie I would usually watch, but it still managed to pleasantly surprise me in some ways. My conclusion: the movie is fun and exciting, but with all the hype surrounding it, I expected something a little more special. I can partly understand why it's so popular, but another part of me feels like it's a bit overrated.
That being said, this is just my personal opinion. Even if it wasn't 100% my cup of tea, you might end up enjoying it more than I did. So, if you like K-pop, animation, and action movies, I'd say it's definitely worth a watch. And if you've already seen it - what did you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below, I'd love to hear them!
XOXO,
Seraphine
